GREEN TIPS

Well, one of the easiest things to do to go green is to just change your diet. You’ll feel better, lose weight, make a positive impact on the environment, and save animals. Just make the switch across the thin line to vegetarianism or veganism (see the vegetarianism and veganism page for more information). It’s so easy because you’re not giving up much; just keep yourself motivated. Try to cave as little as possible, and if you feel like you’re going to cave, just buy some meat replacers, like tofurky jerky and seitan.

Here are more easy ways to make your lifestyle greener:

  • Switch your household cleaners and detergents to more ecofriendly cleaners, without harsh chemicals. This will make your clothes feel better; I know my clothes feel itchy if I use detergents with a lot of unnatural chemicals.
  • Buy locally grown produce; this will make your body more suited to the climate. (For example, mangoes are meant to cool the creatures that eat them down. This is why they grow in tropical climates.) It also saves all that fuel that is normally used to transport the food to where you live.
  • Try to buy as much organic cotton as you can in replacement of the regular cotton clothes you would normally buy. A lot of pesticides are used on the regular cotton clothes, which are bad for the environment.
  • Try to not go to fast food restaurants, especially KFC and McDonalds, as well as a few others. The food is really bad for you, (yes, everyone says that a lot, but I promise you, this is the most unhealthy food ever) those two buy their meat from the worst slaughterhouses, and I know McDonalds cuts down the rainforest for their cattle. (Other fast food restaurants also cut down the rainforest for their cattle.)
  • Buy reusable lunch containers and water bottles. I would recommend that you buy the steel containers rather than the plastic ones; they are better for the environment.
  • Try to buy things that don’t contain a lot of little individual wrappers; it wastes a lot of plastic, which takes 700,000 years to decompose!
  • Recycle as much as you can; buy a smaller trash bin and a larger recycle bin to encourage that process.
  • Buy recycled paper and notebooks, as well as any other office supplies you need. Ticonderoga makes really good recycled pencils.
  • Turn on the lights only when you need them (when it’s dark) and turn them off when you leave a room.
  • Try to take shorter showers (showers, not baths; baths use a lot more water). Aim for about five minutes in the shower when you don’t wash your hair (for a girl, washing your hair every night is bad, and the excess chemicals in the ocean are even worse) and for about ten if you have long hair. Guys, aim for about seven every night, or less if you can. But get clean! No one likes to sit by someone who smells. Just aim for that little of time. If you can’t make it, it’s fine.
  • Unpug your iPod, cell phone, game player, etc. chargers. It uses power when you keep them plugged in the socket.
  • Buy makeup brushes with fake fur and products that aren’t tested on animals. They have really good makeup brushes from ecotools.
  • Start your own garden!!! I just started mine not too long ago, and am still working on it. It is a good excuse to go outside and enjoy the fresh air. Plant vegetables and fruits so you can enjoy delicious, fresh produce during the seasons.
  • Go do something during the day! Go out and enjoy yourself. Turn off the tv and go play a game of tennis or basketball, even if you’re not good at it. Go hang out with friends at a local gym and walk on the treadmills and talk, or go swimming on a hot day (depending on where you live). Just get out and have fun.

Well, that’s about it. Take some of that advice and make your life greener! You’ll do yourself and the planet a favor!
